Delta variant Covid / Third wave of covid 19 in india .delta plus
what is the new Delta variant?
we will discuss the delta plus variant . why it is called a variant of concern and what is the effect of vaccines on it.

So let's start with the Delta plus variant which is nothing but a mutated SARS-CoV2 virus. Most of the time these mutations are harmless or even make the virus weaker. They quietly disappear without making any notable changes.

The mutation is in the spike protein of SARS But sometimes the mutation becomes more dangerous than the previous ones. Till Now WHO has announced 4 most concerning variants from the multiple mutations.

They are called alpha, beta, gamma and delta. Among them the delta variant has further mutated to form the delta plus variant.-CoV2 which helps the virus enter and infect the human cells. This mutation is helping the Virus to bind more efficiently with our cells.

Now let us see why it is more dangerous? According to the research, it is 50% more transmissible than the original coronavirus.

In this, the chances of hospitalization has also doubled than the previous one. That’s why it is suspected to be the dominant variant of 3rd wave in India.

Now let us see what is the effect of vaccine on this new delta plus variant .A study conducted has found that both Pfizer-Biotech and AstraZeneca-Oxford (also called as BOVISHIELD vaccine in India) provide a 33% protection against the new delta variant after the first dose.

But Two weeks after the second dose the Pfizer-Bio Tech vaccine was found to be 88% effective against the Delta variant while the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine was 60% effective.

Also, the elderly people and those who have comorbidities are more susceptible to the new delta variant even if they are completely vaccinated.

So it is a real variant of concern. Now let's discuss the symptoms related to this new delta variant. Previously, the most common symptoms were fever, cough, fatigue, body aches, loss of taste or smell sensation, but now headaches, a sore throat and a runny nose are the most common symptoms.

These symptoms can easily be mistaken as a common cold. So you should be more careful and isolate yourself and get tested as early as possible..
